Home Remedies for Beautiful Hair

Your hair can say a lot about your physical and mental health. However, maintaining a good crop of healthy hair on one’s head is not an easy task, given the stress levels, size-zero guided diets, hormonal changes, usage of too many styling products and other such factors. Similar to skin, hair care involves cleansing, conditioning and strengthening. This can be achieved by adopting these simple hair care home remedies.

Cleansing:

1. The most effective homemade shampoo is a mixture of reetha, shikakai and amla. Soak overnight in equal amounts, in approximately 1 litre of water. The next day, boil the mixture slowly until it is reduced to half. Cool and strain.

2.   Tea Tree Oil is known to be very effective for treating head lice. Parents of little kids can use this shampoo as an alternative to harsh chemical shampoos. Tea Tree Oil also helps unblock clogged hair follicles moisturizes hair and keeps the scalp free of bacterial and fungal problems. A mild solution of Tea Tree Oil and natural shampoo also helps cradle cap in infants.

3.  Chamomile is an excellent tonic for hair. Use it as a rinse after shampooing to restore shine and bring out your hair’s natural highlights.

Conditioning:

1. Massage half a cup of mayonnaise into unwashed hair and cover it with a plastic bag and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse a few times before shampooing.

2.   People with dry hair should massage rosewater on the scalp, as this is very helpful in treating dry hair. Mix olive oil and honey with a  ripe papaya and apply this to your hair. Shampoo after an hour.

3.  Oily haired people can use a mixture of multani mitti, amla, reetha andshikakai. Shampoo hair after 40 minutes.

4.   Peppermint oil is very useful for hair care as it has a cooling effect on the head, and removes dandruff and lice. It can also be used to condition the hair. Peppermint Oil also regulates and normalises oily hair. It is an astringent so it helps treat oily scalps.

5.   A paste of fresh fenugreek leaves applied over the scalp regularly before a bath helps hair grow, preserves its natural colour, keeps hair silky and also cures dandruff.

Strengthening:

 1.   Bananas contain rich minerals and other nutrients that promote hair recovery and rehabilitation. A banana mask is perfectly suited for dry, dyed hair and for permed hair.

2.    Lettuce juice is very effective in resolving the symptoms of hair loss.

3.   Castor oil hair loss treatment has been known to work well for hair loss. Many believe that it truly does grow back lost hair.

4.    Lavender stimulates hair growth, balances oil production and replenishes the hair and scalp.

5.    Curd is a conditioner and a cleansing agent.

6.    Cedarwood is a great medium to get oxygen into the hair follicles and stimulate growth.

Makeup Tips for Holiday Beauty

Even if you are going to dig out the same little black dress to wear to your holiday parties every year, you can still turn up the volume on your everyday beauty routine. Don’t be scared to break out of your beauty box for just one night.
Take a cue from makeup artist James Boehmer, director of global artistry at Nars Cosmetics who uses his expertise at many runway shows.

He describes this season’s look seen at designer Carmen Marc Valvo’s fall show as “baroque with a punk edge.”

This trend is a great way to show off a holiday face — glamour with a twist.

“The eyeliner is a reference to the classic eyeliner, but with a punk spirit,” says Boehmer, “so it’s not delicate. The skin is very luminous; we talked about the girls looking haunted, but in a very pretty way.”

So Morticia Addams, move over. This season, it’s all about the drama, and not just during conversation around the bar. Let’s get the party face started. Here are some tips and trends:

–Be prepared

The trend in makeup foundation may be all aglow … but the shade of your foundation is critical. There are lots of factors that come into play. If you’ve been wearing Revlon all your life ever since you outgrew Bonne Bell in your teens then you need to take a U-turn right now, no matter where you are, and make an appointment with a makeup expert. There are hundreds of them out there … and many of them are available instantly by just walking into your favorite department store. They can answer all your questions, including “Do I have warm undertones or cool undertones in my skin?” Ask your friends for suggestions, and get thee to a beauty consultant fast. You’ll be surprised at how many years younger you may look with this one switch.

–Have a rosy outlook

Yes, the nude face may be a big trend, but the holidays are all about being merry and bright! So experiment with the newest berry hues and warm up those lips. If you don’t do anything else for your party face, try using a darker lipstick or gloss. This is another one of those times when consulting an expert may be your best bet. Velvety matte lipsticks and lip liners are popular now, but if you’re stuck on glosses, not to worry, just try a new hue. And make sure you reapply lipstick often.

–Keep an eye out

Besides your lips, the eyes are another way to focus on upping the glam factor for a holiday party face. The smoky eye is now famous (and infamous) for stealing the show. But there’s nothing worse than overdoing it and scaring the kids. Try some of the newer pencils that are more subtle than smearing on dark eyeshadows. Then, opt for a volumizing mascara to give your eyes that extra emphasis for an evening soiree.

–Go bold on brows

Maybe you’ve got the smoky eye down, but you rarely pay attention to your brows. Well, they can make a huge impact on your overall look. And this is one thing with which you can easily experiment — brow pencils and brow gels are very affordable. Fill in those barely there hairs and follow the natural line of your brows … you’ll be amazed at the results. Remember, bolder is better, but “natural” is the key word.

Non-surgical nose job offers patients results without commitment

We all have that one thing that we would like to change about ourselves – weight, height, hair color. For 35-year-old Olivia Kraus – it was her nose.

“When I see my nose I’m not satisfied because I see this dent and crack in it,” Kraus said. “I don’t like it.”

Kraus worried that it was a problem that would only worsen with age.

“My father has the crack in his nose and it has drooped as he’s gotten older,” Kraus said. “So I live in fear about how it’s going to progress.”

Kraus said she was always scared to get a nose job because it would be permanent. So when a friend told her about a non-surgical procedure to fix the crack in her nose, she decided to go see Dr. Eric Schweiger, a dermatologist in New York City.

“It’s a procedure that can be done in about 15 minutes,” Schweiger said. “The patient comes in and has an identifiable issue with their nose, like a bump or a downward turning of their nose, and we use filling material to correct that problem.”

After applying a topical anesthetic, Dr. Schweiger injected a filler, called Radiesse, into Kraus’ nose. The filler is made of a protein that commonly found in human bone.

“We can physically mold the filler when it’s under the skin into the place that we want it to be,” Schweiger said. “We also put a little bit of Botox in the muscle that kind of pulls down the nose – and that, in about five days can kind of help push up the nose.”

Not everyone is a candidate for the procedure and possible side effects, which typically go away within five to seven days after the procedure, include bruising and swelling.  The results are not permanent, Schweiger said, which means most patients will have to come back in for touch ups every nine months to a year.

Kraus, however, believed the results were worth it.

“The crack is gone and it looks really good,” Kraus said. “I can’t wait to see how it progresses over the next couple of days. But if it stayed the way it is right now I’d be really happy.”

12 Ways to Younger-Looking Eyes

Eyes are one of the most prominent features of a person and because the skin around the eyes is delicate and more prone to creases, sagging, and puffy dark circles, it requires special care. New York Dermatologist and Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Cameron Rokhsar, M.D., lists the top eye care treatments and habits that can reverse signs of aging and create younger-looking eyes.

eye care treatments provide a wide variety of options for the everyday person who wants a refreshed and less-tired look that will last. Eyes are one of the first things to notice about a person, so it’s important to have bright and youthful eyes rather than tired-looking bags and wrinkles.

1.    Beauty Sleep Is Real

Wrinkles, bags, and crow’s feet don’t stand a chance against an adequate enough sleep and day-to-day skincare. Getting the right amount of sleep every night at regular intervals is essential to leading a long, healthy and productive lifestyle. “Beauty sleep” is not just an expression; it really is the key to beautiful, healthy skin that lasts. Sleep restores the skin’s natural balance and increases the effectiveness in skincare treatments. Skin automatically rejuvenates itself during sleep.

Not enough sleep leads to stress, which triggers the adrenal glands that create an over production of the stress hormone, cortisol. Once the hormone is released, it stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Stress creates a chain reaction that is recipe for bad skin. Clinical studies have proven stress is the common denominator of many skin problems.

When you don’t get enough sleep, not only are you tired, but you physically show the signs of sleep deprivation with puffy, under-eye bags and dehydrated skin. The ideal amount of consecutive sleep is 6 to 8 hours in order to allow the body to get through the 5 sleep stages. During these stages, the cortisol and insulin levels help produce more collagen. During the fourth stage, growth hormones surge and tissue repair occurs.

When a lack of sleep increases the levels of stress hormones, the body undergoes chronic stress, which leads to increased inflammation and subsequent acceleration of aging, and worsening of acne. Poor sleep habits can result in skin sensitivity and irritation. The skin gradually loses its ability to protect itself from all the chemicals, pollutants and dirt it comes in contact with everyday.

By avoiding caffeine 4 to 6 hours before bed, limiting alcohol and heavy meals before sleep, getting regular exercise, and developing a regular bedtime and morning wake-up call, even on the weekends, your skin will thrive in healthy glow. The skin on the eyelid is so thin and delicate it is one of the most noticeable aspects of the face, especially when skin isn’t treated right. As such a delicate part of the face, it needs these healthy lifestyle changes in order to flourish.

2.    Eye Cream Maintenance

Since eye skin is the thinnest skin on the body, it has the best opportunity for skin absorption of cream with rejuvenating effects. Creams are best absorbed by eyelid skin, however it is important to make sure that they contain the right ingredients for optimal eyelid skin health. Among key ingredients to look for are retinol, vitamin C, and growth factors.

As the body ages, the skin loses collagen, an important foundational protein. Retinol, is essentially vitamin A which works as an effective cell-communication ingredient and stimulates new collagen production. Retinol is an ingredient to look for when shopping for eye creams, along with vitamin C and growth factors. Vitamin C has many benefits for the body’s overall well-being, but the skin in particular reaps many rewards from Vitamin C’s power to slow down free-radicals, which are the unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness. Growth factor products are another formidable skin care ingredients that have the ability to drive repair and new skin cell growth that has been overexposed to UV rays. Crow’s feet are eye wrinkles that should be treated with care because of the fine lines that form overtime from sun damage and squinting. Having a quality daily eye cream can help keep the delicate skin around the eyes younger and healthier looking for longer.

3.    Cover Up: Sunglasses

Think sunglasses are just to help stop squinting? They do more than that; they protect the thinnest skin on the body, which is more susceptible to harmful ultraviolet rays (UV). The wrinkles that form around the eyes are fine and can easily sag below and above the eye. Protecting eyes from sun damage should be a priority, regardless of the type of skin tone, ethnicity, or eye color; although people with lighter eyes typically have lighter skin with less pigment, and thus experience sun damage easily.

Choosing eyeglasses with UV protection should be a top priority. It is crucial to protect the eyes, especially during peak sun hours of 10am to 4pm, in order to avoid eyesight damage, as well as sun damage to the delicate eyelid skin. Choose sunglasses with 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB ray protection. Different UV rays are specific wavelengths of light that emit their own sun damage at varying degrees. The color or shade of the lens’ darkness actually has nothing to do with the level of protection, so instead just focus on the percent of UV blockage.

4.    Puffy Eyes? Limit Salt Intake

Nearly everyone has woken up with swollen and puffy eyes that cannot be treated with a simple cream. In order to have younger looking eyes it’s important to not only pay attention to sleep and stress, daily skincare, and eyewear, but to avoid a high sodium diet that may result in puffy, tired looking eyes.

Dr. Rokhsar suggests patients avoid salt during dinnertime because a salty meal right before bed will only make puffy eyes worse. The body needs salt, just not so late at night. Kidneys control water retention and release, and when there is a high level of salt, the kidneys will retain water in response, which results in bloating. The skin under the eyes are so thin, that once sodium levels are high and the body is at rest in the horizontal sleep position, the water will pool beneath the eyelids. By morning time there is a noticeable puffiness beneath the eyes because gravity redistributes water when lying flat as a direct result of the high-salt intake.

5.    Dark Under-Eyes Circles

Dark circles are another tired-looking feature nobody wants, and is often difficult to cover up with makeup. The claims that one cream can completely cure a person of dark under-eye circles are misleading because there are multiple causes for dark circles.

Some treatments are lifestyle changes such as more sleep, a healthier and well balanced diet, and to quit bad habits such as smoking. Smoking causes vascular, blood vessel, problems that can make the dark under-eye circles more prominent. Vascular congestion can appear purple and may be associated with allergies; although it is significant to understand that some people are just born with more vessels than others beneath their eyes. Certain ethnicities are prone to dark under-eye circles, predominantly seen in Indians and Hispanics. But everyone inevitably ages, and with that comes the loss of fat pads beneath the eyes, accentuating aging eyes.

Under-the-eye hollowness then appears and creates a dark, unsightly shadow.

Another important cause of under eye circles is allergies or eczema. Rubbing the eyelid skin can cause darkening of the eyelids. Avoid scrubbing washes on eyelids. If a patient has seasonal allergies and suffers from itchy eyes, the daily intake of an over-the-counter antihistamine such as Zyrtec or Allegra may be the right answer.

6.    Thermage To Tighten Eyelids

One of the most well known treatments for tightening and lifting the eyelid, reducing fine wrinkles above the eye and reduce hooding eyelids that characteristically droop, is Thermage. Thermage uses radiofrequency technology to deliver heat into the lower layers of the skin and tighten internally. The skin lifts and smoothes out wrinkles to renewal facial contours. Immediately after treatment, the skin may feel tighter, smoother and appear more youthful, and will increasingly tighten overtime because of the progressive collagen production. Results can last two years or longer depending upon the patient’s natural aging process.

7.    Fraxel Eyelid Tightening

Fraxel, a fractional laser treatment, can be used to gently resurface eyelids gradually and can be used in addition to filler or surgical treatments. This laser therapy is the most innovative approach to laser skin treatment by resurfacing the skin 15 to 30 percent each session. Just one treatment Fraxel can reverse up to 10 years of eye aging. Microscopic columns of treatment are administered along the desired sections of skin which stimulates collagen production, the protein responsible for tightening and structuring the skin.

Results are usually seen within one to two weeks post treatment, and there is virtually no downtime because no invasive surgery was necessary. Aside from eyelid tightening, the Fraxel laser is also an effective treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, surface scarring, sun spot pigmentation and sun damage.

8.    Ulthera For Upper Eyebrows

Ultherapy is FDA approved for nonsurgical brow lifts, which is an effective way to smooth out and tighten the skin around the eyes to achieve a natural, young looking set of eyes without turning to surgery alternatives. Ulthera uses ultrasound technology to tighten skin by thermally heating deep layers of the skin, which stimulates new collagen production. With new and healthy collagen, the skin will tighten and strengthen the foundational layers of the skin, ultimately smoothing skin from the inside out.

When Ultherapy lifts the brow and opens up the eyes, it reduces the excess skin that rests on the lids. This non-surgical alternative creates and maintains a more youthful appears in one 30 to 60 minute procedures that provides patients the ability to forgo invasive eyelift surgery.

9.    Fillers: Belotero and Restylane Around The Eyes

Injectable fillers are effective ways to smooth the skin around the eyes and provide subtle, natural looking volume to correct hollow eyes. Belotero is specially designed to diminish both fine lines around the eyes and the upper lip. It’s one of the newest fillers released onto the market that can provide volume while simultaneously hydrating the skin.

Another effective non-surgical eyelift treatment utilizes Restylane’s ability to create a fuller lower eyelid while filling in lines and folds. This cosmetic dermal filler’s key ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar found in the body. Because it is naturally produced, there is no chance of an allergic reaction, which also makes it biodegradable. The body will naturally break down the filler substance within six to nine months post injection. The whole procedure takes 10 minutes and is injected into the lower eyelids in order to rejuvenate its appearance and restore volume for sunken eyes.

In order to ensure that eye-restoration is fully addressed, volume, texture, and excess skin must all be taken into consideration when choosing to correct baggy eyes. Often times, surgery is not necessary to remove excess skin around the eyes, however the tightening of skin is an effective approach to supplement Restylane.

10.    Get Rid of Crow’s Feet With Dysport and Botox

Patients often complain about the crow’s feet that appear along their eyes from years of smiling, laughing and squinting. Similar to the effects of fillers, which tighten and smooth the skin, Botox and Dysport provide the patient with similar results. Dysport and Botox share the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin that simply immobilizes the nerve’s messages and stops the muscle contraction from happening. The repetitive muscle contraction, whether it be squinting or laughing are what cause the lines around the outside of the eyes. Botulinum A blocks the nerves that cause unnecessary micro movements of the muscles, which stops the crow’s feet wrinkles from happening.

The nerves won’t lose their ability to contract muscles; instead it will just stop the face from making micro-movements. When micro-movements are made throughout the face, they begin to form fine lines and hard to treat deep wrinkles. Results of a tighter and smoother skin around the eyes generally begin to show 24 hours to five days after injection. These wrinkles are indicators of older age, although recently younger people are taking steps towards avoiding the development of wrinkles all together by using Botox or Dysport.

11.    Latisse For Longer Lashes That Last

Having long eyelashes can give the appearance of more youthful and attractive eyes. There are hundreds of different ways to appear to have longer lashes. Fake eyelashes with messy glue, makeup tricks, curlers, diets, transplants, and over-the-counter drugs, are all inconvenient methods that could be avoided.

Latisse is the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for eyelashes. The results are thicker, longer and darker lashes with a simple treatment application. Beautiful actress and model Brooke Shields uses Latisse for longer, fuller lashes because of its effectiveness. It is not only a safe alternative to the chaos of other methods, but it is also delicate to the sensitive surrounding area. Latisse is applied to the base of the upper lashes and is clinically proven to be highly effective in almost 80 percent of patients.

Patients that dab Latisse on their top lids each night before bed will start to see longer lashes after 4 weeks and full results are achieved in 16 weeks. The medication will automatically spread to the lower lashes when you blink.

12.    Blepharoplasty: The Surgical Eyelift

When non-surgical treatments do not provide the patient with the results they desire, Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery is an effective route to achieve cosmetic goals. The procedure is performed by making tiny incisions in the eyelid and under the eye. Any excess fat is removed, the skin is then tightened and sutures are secured. Removal of the under eye fat pad will significantly decrease any puffiness around the eye, which results in a brighter and wider eye appearance. Eyelid surgery can correct droopy upper eyelids, also known as hooded eyes, but does not remove dark circles or lift sagging eyebrows, each of which can be treated separately.

A surgical eyelift is considered a minor surgery and can be performed while the patient is under local anesthesia or IV sedation. A combination of eyelid tightening, skin and fat pad removal can be performed on either the upper, lower eyelid or both

Teens who eat lots of chocolate tend to be slimmer

Another study appears to find benefits from eating chocolate: researchers from the University of Granada in Spain analzying data on European teenagers found a strong link between high chocolate consumption and low levels of body fat.

Dr. Magdalena Cuenca-García, of the Department of Medical Physiology in Granada University’s School of Medicine, and colleagues report their findings in a recent online issue of the journal Nutrition.

The researchers are part of the HELENA study group, which is collecting and analyzing data about the diets, fitness and various health measures among European adolescents.

Previous studies have already found that regular chocolate consumption is linked to leanness in adults. There is also evidence that eating chocolate may reduce cardiovascular disease risk.

Eating chocolate ‘may help youngsters stay slim’Chocolate squares

Researchers from Spain have found that teens who eat chocolate have lower levels of total fat and fat around the middle than those who abstain.

The Spanish researchers decided to use the HELENA data to see if the same could be said of teenagers.

They analyzed records on 1,458 adolescents from nine European countries who were aged from 12 to 17 and who had completed computer-based questionnaires asking them to recall what they had eaten in the previous 24 hours on 2 non-consecutive days.

The records also contained information from which they could assess participants’ BMI, waist circumference, body fat measures and activity levels.

The results showed that higher chocolate intake among the teenagers were linked with lower levels of total fat and fat around the middle, regardless of other factors (including exercise).

The researchers in this study did not examine why chocolate appears to help the youngsters stay slim, but some previous studies have suggested it could be something to do with the flavonoids it contains.

Flavonoids are a group of polyphenolic compounds known to have numerous beneficial biochemical and antioxidant effects. For example, they appear to protect against cardiovascular disease through antioxidant, anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory properties.

“It’s also possible that flavonoids in chocolate may decrease blood concentrations of bad cholesterol and reduce blood pressure,” says Dr. Susanna C. Larsson, of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, where she and her team conducted a study of Swedish men that found chocolate consumption may also lower stroke risk.

Many researchers say it is dark chocolate that is good for the heart, but Dr. Larsson says, surprisingly, that 90% of the chocolate eaten in Sweden – as they also found in their study – is milk chocolate.

Sneaky Hairstyle Tricks To Disguise Gray Roots

If you find gray roots and regrowth peeking through too soon, try one of these handy tricks to disguise them as long as possible:

1.) Don’t pluck: You may feel tempted to pluck those grays away, but try to resist. Plucking can damage the hair follicle and can possibly lead to bald patches.

2.) Braided styles: French braids or braids along your hairline (like Blake Lively’s or Jada Pinkett Smith’s below) are a great way to tuck away grays and conceal any appearance of regrowth between color applications.

3.) Change your part: For some women, more grays appear on one side of the head than the other. Plus, parting your hair in the same place can make regrowth more prominent. You can switch your part to the other side or try a slightly messy part to help conceal the grays.

4.) Clever clips: Embellished clips or barrettes can conceal root growth and grays. Try twisting and pinning your roots underneath the colored hair. Or, clip hair into a half-up hairstyle to cover grays at the crown and part if you don’t have time to color yet.

5.) Headband or scarf: Wrap a carefully-placed headband or scarf around your head to cover up the roots and leave only your colored ends showing.

6.) Powder: If you’re in a pinch and can’t color your hair, find a colored powder makeup, such as eye shadow or foundation, which matches your hair color. Use a damp brush and dab powder over roots to temporarily camouflage them.

Wipe out gray roots at home with the perfect hair color match from eSalon, which provides personalized hair color made just for you! First time clients can get a full color kit for only $9.95* (50% off!) with a satisfaction guarantee.

Forget creams and ointments – duct tape really can cure verrucas

Doctors on a new Channel 4 show, Health Freaks, find homespun remedies are not all quacker

Quack remedies such as duct tape to cure verrucas and bathing in oats to cure skin complaints really can work, a panel of doctors has found.

Some sufferers of common complaints have sworn by household cures for years, which also include using the lubricant WD-40 to ease arthritis and drinking breast milk to cure infections.

They had never been put to the test until the Channel 4 programme Health Freaks, broadcast last night, carried out controlled studies on them.

Dr Ellie Cannon, a west London GP, was among the medics who assessed some of the unusual homespun treatments presented to them by advocates of the cures.

She said: “We know people do use duct tape for verrucas and we did see in the trial we did that it improved them for some. In one case the verruca went completely.”

One patient featured on the program said they had had a verruca for eight years and had been unable to shift it until they used duct tape, which finally cleared it up.

In the trial, some participants used duct tape and some used Elastoplast.

Dr Cannon said further investigation was needed to establish why duct tape was so effective as a remedy, as this remained unclear.

She added: “It’s not what we would call a consistent treatment. It doesn’t work for everyone.

“The three of us on the panel had different theories about why it was working. It might be that the tape is starving the verruca of oxygen, or it might be that the adhesive in the tape is causing an immune reaction.”

Other unusual treatments tested on the programme include breast milk to cure infections and an oat bath for the skin complaint psoriasis.

Breast milk was found to be less effective than one might expect, Dr Cannon said, while oat baths did help a little.

Another homespun remedy, using the lubricant WD-40 to treat arthritis and chest pain, was suggested by two builders but was deemed to be too unsafe to trial.

Dr Cannon said: “One of the things that surprised me was just how widespread the use of some of these remedies is. WD-40 is so widely used on building sites to treat arthritis that the manufacturers have had to put a notice on their website saying it’s not for human use.

“In years gone by the remedy might only be known within a particular family but the internet has made them much more commonly known.

“Another thing that surprised me was how prepared people are to try out remedies that could have dangerous side-effects, like drinking their own urine.”

Other remedies that the doctors were presented with included amber necklaces to cure teething trouble, copper coins to clear up styes, turmeric as an acne cure and leeches to cure deep vein thrombosis.

The doctors concluded that many of the “cures” are a result of the placebo effect, when patients’ bodies heal themselves because the patient is convinced they have been given a miracle remedy.

“Even when people have three doctors telling them their treatment has no medical benefits, once they are in that zone, believing in their remedy, they won’t be persuaded otherwise.”

In the test, all of the people given duct tape found their verrucas shrank by at least one millimeter, whereas none of those who used surgical tape saw any difference at all.

Dr Cannon said: “I’ll certainly suggest to my patients that they give it a try if they aren’t having any success with other treatments.”

How to maintain healthy hair through the decades

Just like skin, hair changes as we age. Here are a few tips to keep locks at their lushest for those in their 20s and beyond.

We all expect our skin to change with the decades. But who knew that time takes a toll on our tresses in much the same way? While some changes are inevitable, some are the result of the insults we hurl at our hair every day: coloring, curling, straightening, taut ponytails.

Want to make the most of what you’ve got? A few tips:

20s: Your crowning glory

This is as good as it gets: the 100,000-150,000 strands that cover your scalp are the healthiest they’ll ever be. “Most damage at this age comes from experimentation with color and using too much heat,” says Rona O’Connor, a Beverly Hills-based stylist who tends to the lush locks of celebrities, including Blake Lively and Brooke Shields.

Still, there’s no time like the present to start taking care of it. For starters, eat right. Healthy hair depends on a range of vitamins and minerals, especially biotin (a B vitamin), zinc, iron, folic acid, vitamins A, C, E, and, most important, protein. “Hair is made of a special protein called keratin, and if you don’t get enough protein in your diet, it can affect the normal hair cycle,” says Dr. Paradi Mirmirani, a member of the faculty of the American Academy of Dermatology who is based in Vallejo, Calif. Women need about 46 grams per day; during pregnancy and breastfeeding intake should boost to 71 grams. Men ages 19 to 70 need 56 grams of protein a day.

Each hair grows out of a follicle, a tiny sac-like hole in the skin. At the bottom of each follicle lives a cluster of cells that make up the root of the hair. As the root grows longer, it produces the shaft of hair that emerges from the scalp. “The shaft is what we wash and dry and curl or straighten into submission,” says Mirmirani, a hair-loss specialist. The shaft is also dead, which is why it’s difficult to repair it once it breaks or the ends are split.

Healthy hair grows about 1 centimeter a month, called the “anagen” phase. At any one time the majority of our hair is actively growing in this phase, which lasts for two to eight years. When this stage comes to its genetically predetermined end, follicles go into a two-week “catagen” or transitional phase when the follicle shrinks, causing the hair to stop growing. From there, the follicle goes into the resting or “telogen” phase. This final stage lasts for up to four months, until the hair falls out and the cycle starts again.

30s: Pregnancy takes a temporary toll

Every day we shed up to 100 hairs. But during pregnancy every follicle is in “grow” mode and normal fallout halts. This explains why many women notice their hair is unusually thick during these months. All good things must come to an end, and within a few months of the baby’s birth, the normal cycles resume and you shed every strand that you’ve been holding on to. “It’s certainly alarming to see all that hair in the bathroom sink, but it’s completely normal,” says Dr. Amy McMichael, professor of dermatology at Wake Forest University.

Other possible causes of hair loss in the 30s: significant weight loss, discontinuing hormonal birth control, illness that’s accompanied by high fever, autoimmune disorders and chronic iron deficiency. “Growing hair requires significant energy,” explains McMichael, “so if your body is stressed in any way, it’s going to divert the attention to where it’s really needed.”

40s and beyond: Let the changes begin

If you’ve made it this far with a full head of healthy hair, thank your lucky genes and clean living. “But no matter what, this is the decade when most women notice that their hair starts to look and feel thin and it turns gray,” says Dr. Carrie Jacob, director of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology. “Follicles shrink so the strands are thinner, and we have fewer of them,” she explains. Plus, the number of follicles in the resting and shedding phases increase. Lower estrogen levels are partly to blame.

You can camouflage thinning hair with color (lighter shades reduce the contrast between hair and scalp), fluffy curls or a layered cut to add volume. Or try minoxidil (Rogaine). “It improves the growth rate and the thickness of the hair, no matter how old you are,” says Mirmirani. Some women find the 5% strength irritating but tolerate the 2% well. It takes about six months to get appreciable growth, and the product only works for as long as you use it.

As for the grays, you’ll likely have a few wiry tendrils peeking through now. By age 50, half of women have noticeable gray. Within each follicle lies a certain number of pigment cells that continuously produce the melanin that gives hair color — right up until they don’t. As we age, the pigment cells gradually die off.

Coloring with semi-permanent tints rather than drying peroxide formulas, and holding back on the heat prevents some damage. Jacob advises using low settings on flat irons and curling irons and says to avoid using them every day. A sealing serum can also protect the cuticle. “Repetitive heat is very damaging.”

Tips on washing your hair (or not)

Wash, rinse and repeat, right? Not so fast. By changing your routine ever so slightly, you can enhance the health of your hair — not to mention that sudsing up twice is usually unnecessarily.

  • Wash your scalp, not your hair. Shampoo strips away hair’s natural oils, called sebum, leading to flyaways and dull, coarse hair. Joico’s Clinicure Purifying Scalp Cleanse ($13.95) contains biotin and vitamin B to nourish the scalp as it cleans and removes oil.
  • Wash every other day (or less). Between washes, try a dry shampoo such as Umberto Beverly Hills Dry Clean Shampoo ($8.99) with rice starch to rejuvenate limp hair.
  • Once a week, use a serum. A serum such as Phyto’s Revitalizing Serum contains gingko biloba and vitamins B5 and B6 to stimulate the scalp, improve thickness and slow down the graying process

Now, plant pill that can reduce wrinkles

Ladies, your dream of popping a pill that can make you look younger may finally come true!

In a first, scientists claim to have developed a new pill that is clinically proven to combat ageing by reducing wrinkles, providing an easier alternative to more invasive measures such as Botox.

The oral supplement, containing plant compounds and vitamins, could reduce the depth of crow’s-feet wrinkles on faces by 10 percent, tests at an independent clinic in Germany have shown.

The study also showed the supplement stimulated the production of collagen, which can prevent wrinkles from forming, ‘The Sunday Times’ reported.

The cocktail of ingredients could offer an alternative to more invasive measures such as Botox or the plethora of face creams on which hundreds of millions are spent by people seeking youthful looks.

The ingredients taken by the women in the study were soy isoflavones, which are plant compounds; lycopene, an antioxidant; vitamin C; vitamin E; and omega-3 fatty acids.

Silicone moulds were made of crow’s feet around the eyes and made again after 14 weeks of taking the supplement. The skin was smoother with less marked wrinkles.

There was a “significant reduction in average wrinkle depth” on a test group of 53 women who took the supplement compared with the control group of 55 women who got a placebo, he report said.

“On average, there was a 10 per cent reduction in wrinkle depth in the test group when compared with placebo,” the report said.

An analysis of the skin found increased levels of collagen and a “reduced severity” of skin roughness.

“We found that a significantly higher number of individuals consuming the test product showed increased levels of collagen after 14 weeks than those who consumed placebo products. To our knowledge, this is the first published report of increased collagen production in skin as a result of an oral intervention,” the report said.

The study was published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.
