5 ways gain weight, Fast and Easy

MD002335Being skinny is not healthy, not when it starts to affect your personal and professional life. I was always on the healthier side of the weight and BMI index recommended for the people my age and height by doctors and medical studies across the globe. Suddenly, I pushed myself to lose weight and then was facing many health problems as I became scrawny, underweight and coupled with my tendency to not gain weight easily, it only added to my health troubles and woes. I then tried the following ways to gain weight in a healthy controlled and easy manner:

Firstly, eating wrong foods is not to gain weight, they add to bulk, cholesterol and only add to couple of health problems you already are troubled with. So, fast food, street food or too much eating is not the answer. Eat fruits like bananas, and healthy fat foods every 4 hours though out the day and don’t skip meals.

Eat more foods that are packed with all nutrients, and add more kinds of food. Pick up full cream milk instead of a skimmed one, eat more salads, dairy products, fish, eggs, eat the soy, curd, pulses, lentils, and vegetables. Eat healthier and get all kinds of nutrients.

Eat foods that have more nutrients but come in small packaging like’s peanuts, all kinds of nuts, use desi ghee (clarified butter) instead of low fat oil for cooking food. Dress your salads with virgin olive oil to pack a punch and at the same time add extra nutrient to your diet to gain weight

Eat a heavy meal before you go to bed or get some sleep. Dinner is supposed to be light but heavy dinners right before sleep are a simple way to gain weight and add that extra spoon of butter. Heavy dinner followed by no or little activity will ensure that all nutrients and fats are simple stored in the body and not wasted or used in any physical activity.

Above all, stay hydrated and consume as much water as possible and other liquids. Above all, do some exercises in consultation with a trained and experienced trainer to focus on the right weight gain areas and ensure healthy weight gain.

Organic foods are healthier than conventionally grown foods

organic foods are healthier than conventionally grown foods

Organic food is controversial, mostly because food is political. People like me who choose to eat organic produce and other foods grown and raised without poisons, carcinogens, heavy metals, other harmful toxic chemicals, and genetically engineered food are constantly forced to defend ourselves.

Happily, doing so just got easier. A recent review of 343 studies published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that organic foods are more healthful than conventional foods, mainly because the former contain higher concentrations of antioxidants, while the latter contain higher levels of the toxic metal cadmium.

What’s so special about antioxidants? According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), antioxidants are man-made or natural substances that can prevent or delay cell damage, which lowers the risk of certain diseases. Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of antioxidants, but organic fruits and vegetables are especially filled with these helpful molecules.

Primarily, antioxidants combat free radicals, which can cause “oxidative stress” – a process that may play a role in the development of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other conditions, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Some of the best food sources for antioxidants include fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C (strawberries, broccoli, kale), vitamin E (nuts, spinach, canola oil), beta carotene (carrots, sweet potatoes, peas), and lycopene (watermelon, pink grapefruit, tomatoes).

On the flip side, what’s so bad about cadmium? First of all, it’s present in cigarette smoke. If that’s not enough, chronic inhalation or oral exposure to cadmium can cause kidney disease, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). On its website, the EPA notes that for non-smokers, food is the largest source of cadmium exposure and that cadmium levels in foods can be increased by the use of fertilizers or sewage sludge on farm fields. The EPA considers cadmium a probable human carcinogen, and yet it pervades our food supply.

Dr. Charles Benbrook, co-author of the recent study, said that buying organic is “the surest way of limiting exposure” to toxins, but people should increase their intake of fruits and vegetables regardless of how they are grown. Yet should they do so with a guilty conscience? That conventionally grown strawberry might not taste so good with the knowledge that it is nutritionally inferior.

We know that organic foods are healthier, and we know why. Yet toxic pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, fungicides and other dangerous farming practices persist – unnecessarily, in my opinion. One of the reasons scientists think organic fruits and vegetables are higher in antioxidants is precisely because they produce more of these substances to ward off insects and other environmental threats. They adapt to their surroundings naturally rather than artificially, kind of like humans. Left to their own devices, it turns out fruits and vegetables are pretty darn smart.

Defenders of conventionally grown crops have argued that any pesticide residues found on their products are too small to pose a health risk. This is probably true if you eat just one carrot or just one pepper. But what about all the many carrots and peppers eaten over a lifetime? We know little to nothing about the long-term effects of sustained exposure to small amounts of pesticide residue, or the health consequences of eating genetically modified and engineered foods. I’m not interested in being a test dummy, and you shouldn’t be either.

Here’s what we do know: Pesticide residues have an accumulative affect. Beginning in the womb, our many chemical exposures stay with us throughout our lives, according to the Pesticide Action Network North America. This is our chemical body burden. We are exposed to such substances not just in dirty food, but also in dirty air, water and soil, largely because of the toxins sprayed and applied on our farms.

Plus, the people routinely applying these toxins – farmworkers – suffer more chemical-related injuries and illnesses than any other workers in the nation, as the nonprofit organization Farmworker Justice notes on its website. These conditions include dizziness, nausea, headaches, breathing difficulty, cancer and reproductive problems, to name just a few. Anyone claiming low-level exposure to pesticides is perfectly safe should tell this to a sick farmworker.

Soon ‘therapeutic bacteria’ to help win ‘battle of bulge’

Researchers have discovered a probiotic that could help prevent obesity.Researchers have discovered a probiotic that could help prevent obesity.

Vanderbilt University investigators have found bacteria that produce a therapeutic compound in the gut inhibit weight gain, insulin resistance and other adverse effects of a high-fat diet in mice.

Sean Davies, Ph.D., said that although it’s hard to speculate from mouse to human but essentially, they have prevented most of the negative consequences of obesity in mice, even though they’re eating a high-fat diet.

He further explained that regulatory issues must be addressed before moving to human studies but the findings suggested that it might be possible to manipulate the bacterial residents of the gut, the gut microbiota, to treat obesity and other chronic diseases.

Other studies have demonstrated that the natural gut microbiota plays a role in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The researchers also observed effects of the compounds in the liver, suggesting that it might be possible to use modified bacteria to deliver therapeutics beyond the gut.

The investigators are currently working on strategies to address regulatory issues related to containing the bacteria, for example by knocking out genes required for the bacteria to live outside the treated host.

The findings will be published in the August issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation

Indian scientists create diagnostic kit for sickle cell anemia

Indian scientists create diagnostic kit for sickle cell anemia

This portable diagnostic kit, a lab-on-a-chip, could be used even by untrained health workers.

The team from the Indian Institute of Technology-Powai, (IIT-P) – Debjani Paul, Ninad Mehendale and Ammar Jagirdar said they will make full use of the rising penetration of mobile phones in India to extend their data processing, sharing and imaging prowess to craft inexpensive diagnostic kits for sickle cell anemia.

Paul and her team is planning to develop a microfluidic chip which can be combined with a mobile phone-based diagnosis platform and used by relatively untrained health workers in rural areas to diagnose sickle cell anemia.

This disorder is widely seen in tribals in the remote regions of states like Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh.

Paul said that around five percent of the children affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) die before they reach the age of two. At present, the doctors detect this disease in clinical settings by techniques such as hemoglobin electrophoresis, high-performance liquid chromatography, etc. These techniques are pretty costly.

Paul added that they are planning to develop the kit over the next 18 months. The project proposed by Paul and her students of the Institute’s Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering received a Grand Challenges Explorations grant in June.

10 Natural Remedies For The Most Common Complaints

10 Natural Remedies For The Most Common Complaints

Herbs have been used for centuries by many cultures to help alleviate common complaints, but nowadays we are much quicker to rush to the medicine cabinet than our herb gardens. It’s time to go back to basics and see how much nature can heal you, naturally!

Rosemary
Coughing? Add Rosemary!
The eycalyptol in this aromatic herb is proven to loosen chest congestion, making phlegm easier to expel. Plus, rosemary is rich in anti-inflammatory tannins, which soothe a sore throat.

Mint
Upset Stomach? Add Mint!
Peppermint contains menthol, a natural plant compound that relaxes pain-inducing intestinal spasms. This reduces belly discomfort by 40 percent

Oregano
Menstrual Cramps? Add Oregano!
Enjoying 2 tsp of fresh oregano daily during menstruation can reduce or eliminates cramps. That’s because this herb’s thymol and carvacrol, relax uterine muscles to prevent painful contractions.

Curry Powder
Achy joints? Add Curry Powder!
The curcumin in curry inhibits the body’s production of prostaglandin E2, an inflammatory compound that over-sensitizes nerves. This blunts joint and muscle pain as effectively as prescription medications.

Dill
Upset G.I. Tract? Add Dill!
Indian scientists found that dill’s limonene works as well as prescription antibiotics at killing harmful intestinal bacteria such as E. coli.

Parsley
Bloated? Add Parsley!
Thanks to its stores or apiol and myristicin, parsley is a natural diuretic that relieves bloat-inducing water retention by preventing salt from being reabsorbed into bodily tissue.

Cayenne
Congested? Add Cayenne!
The fiery capsaicin in cayenne deactivates substance P, a neaurotransmitter linked to inflammation. The result is less sinus congestion and pressure

Basil
Feeling Down? Add Basil!
The eugenol and rosmarinic acid in basil boost the brain’s production of dopamine and seratonin. According to Indian researchers, this could lead to sunnier moods in as little as three days.

Cilantro/Corriander
Feeling Tired? Add Cilantro/Corriander!
The carboxylic acid in cilantro binds to heavy metals such as mercury in the blood and carries them out of the body. Their removal reverses the toxin buildup that causes chronic fatigue, joint pain and depression.

Ginger
Having Nausea? Add Ginger!
Ginger’s gingerol and shogaol calm digestive tract spasms to reduce nausea better than motion-sickness drugs.

There you have it, nature’s medicine cabinet. Not only are herbs very healing but they are also nutritional powerhouses! I believe everyone should be growing their own little herb gardens on their windowsills, as they have so many uses and health benefits.

High-Salt Diets Could Double Risk of Heart Woes for Diabetics

High-Salt Diets Could Double Risk of Heart Woes for Diabetics

A diet loaded with salt is associated with double the risk of heart attack or stroke in people with type 2 diabetes. The risk skyrockets even higher among those whose diabetes isn’t well-managed, a new Japanese study reports.

The study found that people with diabetes who consumed an average of 5.9 grams of sodium daily had double the risk of developing heart disease than those who consumed, on average, 2.8 grams of sodium daily. In addition, heart disease risk jumped nearly 10-fold for people with poorly managed type 2 diabetes and a diet with excess salt.

However, it’s important to note that this study only found an association between salt intake and increased heart disease; the study wasn’t designed to prove that the increased salt intake actually caused heart disease.

Still, experts believe it’s important to limit salt in the diet.

“The findings are very important from a public health point of view,” said Dr. Prakash Deedwania, chief of cardiology for the Veterans Administration Central California Health Care System and a professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

“Everyone’s focused on controlling glucose [blood sugar] to prevent diabetes complications. Salt intake is not as well emphasized, but this shows it should be reduced as well,” said Deedwania, a member of the American College of Cardiology’s Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Committee.

The study highlights the need for people with diabetes to track more than just carbohydrates when managing their daily diet, said Deedwania.

Public health officials previously have established a link between diabetes and heart disease. There are about 29 million Americans with diabetes, and they die from heart disease at a rate 1.7 times higher than people without diabetes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Salt — also called sodium — is known to increase blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association. Accordingly, U.S. nutritional guidelines call for limits on salt intake. Because of the already increased risk of heart disease, people with diabetes should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. People without diabetes should limit their sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams, the CDC says. In the current study, the lowest average was 2.8 grams a day, which equals 2,800 milligrams.

“This is something we have been touting with diabetes patients,” said Dr. Spyros Mezitis, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “Now we have more evidence to solidify our arguments.”

The new study involved nearly 1,600 people, aged 40 to 70, participating in a nationwide study of diabetes complications in Japan. They responded to a survey about their diets, including salt intake, and researchers reviewed data on heart complications participants experienced over the course of eight years.

The investigators found no link between salt intake among diabetics and increased risk of kidney disease, diabetes-related eye problems or death.

Diabetes and salt have similar harmful effects on the cardiovascular system, Mezitis said. Both cause blood vessels to harden, and both increase the risk of blood clots that can cause a heart attack or stroke.

“Because the vascular complications of diabetes are similar to those of salt, that’s where it becomes doubly as bad,” he said. “The higher the salt intake, the worse the cardiovascular effects we see.”

However, Mezitis cautioned that the study needs to be replicated in America. Japanese patients are not as heavy as Americans, they eat less salt, and they do not take as many cholesterol-lowering drugs.

The study also relied on people’s own reports of salt intake, which could lead to some inaccuracy, said Dr. Robert Carey, a professor of endocrinology at the University of Virginia and spokesman for the Endocrine Society.

“I would not recommend any guideline changes based on this study, but I think this study strongly suggests there may be a relationship with cardiovascular disease and salt intake among diabetics,” Carey said.

Discussions underway to address nursing shortage in Caribbean

Discussions underway to address nursing shortage in Caribbean

Jamaica’s minister of health, Dr Fenton Ferguson, says that discussions are underway to facilitate the seamless movement of nurses throughout the Caribbean in order to address needs in various areas.

The aim is to address imbalances, which challenge the delivery of quality healthcare in each territory.

Ferguson, who was addressing the opening ceremony of the 41st annual general meeting of the Regional Nursing Body in Kingston on Tuesday, said that, while there is an overall shortage of nurses throughout the region, particularly in specialist areas, there is an oversupply in some territories, and in some categories.

“We have opened discussions aimed at tapping into this pool of available nursing resources and have a situation where there can be a seamless movement of the talent, between territories, that it will fulfill identified needs, and address the imbalance,” he stated.

Ferguson said more on this development will be announced at a later date.

He said that as far as Jamaica is concerned, “I have directed that we limit looking extra-regionally for nurses at this time, except for those instances when we need specialist skills that are not available locally.”

The health minister said the government does not have the capacity to absorb the number of nurses that are produced by the various institutions each year.

“Even though the private sector is responding, we still have some issues… we are of the view that at this time, we must look internally, to ensure that those persons who are unemployed, we must create opportunities for them,” he said.

Ferguson said that his vision for Jamaica is the creation of a healthcare delivery system that will become the hub for the Caribbean, and be a major player, in the Americas.

In her address, chair of the Regional Nursing Body, Elnora Warner, explained that the body was established to set and maintain standards of nursing education and practice in member territories, through regional cooperation, with the expressed purpose to raise the standard of nursing service to the people of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

A Recipe For Fat Flush Water (It Literally Flushes Fat)

A Recipe For Fat Flush Water (It Literally Flushes Fat)

You may have heard some of the hype about “Fat Flush Water.” But how exactly does water flush fat out of your system? Clearly, water is not some kind of magic diet supplement. Your body needs enough water everyday to keep hydrated and cleanse itself of unwanted materials. Fat deposits that form on the body can be tough to break down and eliminate, but proper nutrition and exercise can help greatly with this.

Fat is broken down when the body uses its fat deposits to produce energy, the triglycerides in the fat cells are removed. Then, these are broken down into fatty acids and glycerols and are then absorbed into your muscle tissue and internal organs where they are then broken down even further through various chemical processes. If the products leftover from these chemical processes are not used by the body as energy, they are then considered waste products and need to be removed from the body. This is where the role of water comes in.

The Role Of Water
Water is the vehicle used to remove these waste products from the body. The leftover materials from the fat breakdown are then filtered out of your organs by the water that you drink. The water carries the waste to your bladder where it is then expelled from your body through your urine! Our bodies truly are amazing! It is important to drink enough water each day to keep you hydrated and facilitate the breakdown and elimination of fat cells. Many sources claim that you should be consuming around 8 glasses of water per day, but this number can largely vary depending on your size, how often you are exercising and even how hot it is outside. Try and keep drinking water consistently throughout the day and consider water before soda, fruit juices or other sugary drinks as these can actually dehydrate your body even more. Often a lack of energy and even headaches throughout the day are simply caused by mild dehydration. It is a good idea to make a conscious effort to drink more water. A little extra is definitely better than not enough!

The Fat Flush Water Recipe -And How It Works

  • 2 Liters (64 oz.) Purified Water
  • 1 Tangerine, sectioned
  • 1/2 Grapefruit, sliced
  • 1 Cucumber, sliced
  • 4 Peppermint or Spearmint Leaves
  • Ice, (made from purified water) optional

Mix in a pitcher before bed and drink throughout the entire next day. Please consider using organic produce for this, if it is unavailable to you, thoroughly wash the produce before adding it to the water.

  • The tangerine increases your sensitivity to insulin, stabilizes blood sugar and because they are high in vitamin C, you increase the fat burning during exercise
  • The grapefruit will increase metabolic energy, burn fat and increase energy
  • The cucumber helps you to feel more full, and acts is a natural diuretic which means less bloating and water retention
  • The mint leaves aid in digestion

There you have it! Please be advised that drinking water alone or even this recipe for the water provided above is unlikely to burn fat on its own. This is considered a fat flush, meaning that you will still need to do the exercise that is required to break down the fat, so that it can then be eliminated by the body. Proper nutrition also plays a huge role, its not about restricting calories, but making sure to get enough calories for your body from healthy, lean, whole foods. At the very least, this tasty water recipe will give you some added nutrients throughout the day, and help to ensure that you are drinking enough water.

Natural Remedy to remove Skin Tags

Natural Remedy to remove Skin Tags

The scientific name of skin tags is achrochordon, the other names of skin tags are cutaneous papilloma or cutaneous tag, fibro epithelial polyp, fibroma molluscum or fibroma pendulum, papilloma colli, soft fibroma, and Templeton skin tag, and these are benign, non-cancerous skin growths that look like a small piece of soft, hanging skin. However this growth is harmless.

These skin tags can be seen on any part of the body, generally caused in the places where there is rapid rubbing of skin with skin, some common places where skin tags generally occur are Eyelids, Axillae (armpits), Lower portion of breasts, Groin, Upper chest portion and neck. Their appearance is different, commonly irregular in shape, brownish fleshy color hanging from the skin. The size varies from 2.5mm diameter to larger size, sometimes they may grow up to size of a grape approximately 5cm diameter. They are composed of nerve cells, fat cells, core of ducts and fibers, covered with epidermis.

Skin tags are commonly caused in the people who are suffering from obesity or overweight, diabetes and women who are pregnant. Sometimes heredity will also be a reason for skin tags. These skin tags equally affect males and females.

Causes of skin tags:
These skin tags commonly affect middle age people. Bunches of collagen and blood vessels that are trapped inside thicker bits of skin are responsible for the cause of skin tags.

When skin is rubbed with skin, which generally occurs in places of body like folds, armpits etc, there are chances of skin tags to appear.

Increasing the likelihood of developing a condition or disease is called a risk factor. Probably more skin folds and creases happen in the people who are obsessed and of overweight which causes achrochordon. Hormones that are secreted in the pregnant women are also a cause for skin tags. People suffering with diabetes are also susceptible to skin tags. Usage of steroids causes the collagen fibers in the skin to bond which forms skin tags on the body skin.

A study in the National Institutes of health, USA proves that nearby 46 percent people are suffering from skin tags, which is mostly due to heredity

Skin Tags Symptoms:
The most common symptom of skin tags is skin growth. The growth is generally very small in diameter, sometimes it may vary up to 5cm in diameter in a worst case.

Skin tag sometimes have a narrow stalk (peduncle), commonly occurred in folds and creases, like armpits, lower portion of breasts in women, upper chest part, groins etc. They are smooth to appear, fleshy brownish in color and irregular shape. They mostly form in groups on the skin which can be stuck when shaving, rubbed by a cloth or by jewelry.

The article further throws you useful information on the home remedies to remove skin tags. Various surveys and researches have shown skin tags as genial and vary in cases which are non-threatening which can be removed or treated being seated back home.

Fenugreek is an amazing herb that contains powerful antioxidants. The efficacy of fenugreek seeds helps in skin tag removal. Soak fenugreek seeds overnight in water and drink this water in the morning before having breakfast. Or even you can chew soaked seeds. This herb also helps you in avoiding anemia or thyroid conditions, but do not consume more than 100 g each day.

Nail Clippers
You can remove skin tags with scissors or nail clippers, but it may cause bleeding and infection, so sterilize the clippers and surrounding area of the skin tag with isopropyl. Now make the skin numb with an ice cube. Pull the skin tag away and cut it with clippers.

Now press it firmly with a sterilized gauze pad until bleeding ceases. Once the bleeding stops, apply an antibiotic.
