Researchers find thousands of bacteria living on cash

Man-Counting-Money-Cash-Dollars

The cash in your pocket may be contaminated with so much bacteria that it could make you sick.

Researchers from the Wright Patterson Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, asked people standing in line at a grocery store checkout and at a high school concession stand to trade a $1 bill from their pocket for a new one. Then the doctors analyzed 68 of those old, worn bills.

Five of the bills contained bacteria that can cause an infection in perfectly healthy people, and 59 of them (that’s 87 percent) were contaminated with bacteria that could cause an infection in anyone with a compromised immune system, such as people with HIV or cancer.

Only four of the bills were relatively clean.

“One-dollar bills are widely used and each is exchanged many times,” said Dr. Peter Ender, one of the study’s authors. “If some are contaminated with bacteria, there is potential to spread these organisms from person to person.”

More Study Needed

So when you hand over the cash, are you giving more of yourself than you intend to? Not necessarily. The study only addresses how much and what kinds of bacteria live on paper money. Another study would be needed to determine whether the money can actually spread the bacteria.

Plus, since the authors only tested 68 bills — there are billions in circulation around the country — the study doesn’t go far enough to prove that as money moves across the country, so do diseases.

Ender says, though, the study does show that paper money is usually full of bacteria, and that a dollar bill could, theoretically, be the magic carpet it rides from one host to another.

But if, in fact, the bacteria can spread on paper money, there’s nothing you can really do about it. You can try to keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth — where the bacteria would get into your body — and try to wash your hands often.

How To Make Your Coffee Truly Healthy?

640_coffee

It’s like dark chocolate: How can something so good be good for you? Well, it’s time you started believing in the power of your java.

Coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the U.S. diet, according to a study from the University of Scranton. Plus, a growing body of research suggests that quaffing a few cups a day can reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even prostate cancer.

The catch? While any coffee will provide some payoff, you need to pick the right roast, storage strategy, and brew method if you want joe with mojo. Here’s your step-by-step guide to making your coffee its healthiest.

1. THE ROAST

In the universe of coffee beans, lighter roasts are the dark horses. “The antioxidant effects of coffee are related to compounds called chlorogenic acids,” says Dr. Peter Martin, director of the Vanderbilt University Institute for Coffee Studies.

“Roasting green coffee beans transforms these acids into better antioxidants—but if you keep on roasting them, they break down again.” So buy light-brown beans

2. THE STORAGE

Roasted coffee beans have free radicals, which become more numerous the longer the beans are exposed to air, according to a study in Food Chemistry. That’s a problem because, as free radical levels rise, some antioxidants in the beans are spent fighting to stabilize them.

Store your beans in an airtight container and don’t grind them until you’re ready to brew; the same study noted that whole beans had fewer free radicals than ground coffee. For an even grind and smooth-tasting joe, use a burr grinder; it ensures that the particles are more uniform in size

3. THE BREWING

The Keurig is king for convenience, but for antioxidants, the Moka is master. Researchers in Italy examined five different brewing methods and found that coffee percolated in a stovetop Moka pot, an espresso pot, or a Neapolitan-style pot produced coffee with more than double the antioxidant levels of java brewed through a paper filter.

Too strong? Add some hot water to espresso to make an americano.

4. THE CUP

How do you take your coffee? Here’s your new answer: “Black, without sugar,” says Martin. “Coffee in itself is extremely nutritious—anything you add is diminishing it.”

A touch of half-and-half may not add many calories, but new research from Croatia suggests that milk can reduce the antioxidant levels. Of course, if you doctor your drink with sugar or artificial sweeteners, you’re just stirring in calories or chemicals. A better way to handle bitter: Add some ground cinnamon to taste.

SWEET TIP

If you’re hooked on your morning sugar fix, a bean with a sweeter, brighter flavor profile can ease the transition for your tastebuds.

Anti-Seizure Drug Ezogabine may Help Reduce Alcohol Consumption

alcohol

Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine have found that the anti-seizure drug ezogabine could potentially help in the road to recovery from alcoholism.

This is the latest study to first show that alcoholism can be effectively treated by this newly discovered mechanism that assists in regulating brain activity known as the Kv7 channel modulation.

“This finding is of importance because ezogabine acts by opening a particular type of potassium channel in the brain, called the Kv7 channel, which regulates activity in areas of the brain that are believed to regulate the rewarding effects of alcohol,” said lead study author Clifford Knapp, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry at university, via a press release. “This research indicates that drugs that open Kv7 channels might be of value in the treatment of alcoholism.”

Researchers said that with more studies, they can better understand the effects of the drug and just how it influences actions of Kv7 channels.
“Because of the close proximity of the doses at which ezogabine reduces drinking and those at which it is reported to produce motor impairment, it is still important to continue to investigate how selective the actions of ezogabine are on the neuronal mechanisms that control alcohol consumption,” Knapp concluded.

Woman give birth in bathtub and cut the umbilical cord with her teeth.

HASSEL-570

A newborn baby in Florida is in critical condition after his mother gave birth while on a 24-hour drug binge.

The baby’s mother, Chrystal Hassell, 37, was seven months pregnant when she gave birth. She told investigators she went into labor after spending the day smoking crack cocaine. She delivered the baby alone in a motel bathtub and reportedly cut the umbilical cord with her teeth.

“At one point, according to her telling investigators, the baby stopped breathing,” Judge Cochran, public information officer for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Hassell gave the baby breaths for nearly an hour before calling 911. Since being airlifted to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., the baby remains in critical condition.

Hassell checked in to the Vacation Host Inn in Ocala, Fla. on Friday night with her 11-month-old son and her boyfriend, Vincent Terry, who was wanted for attempted murder in Colorado. At the time of the baby’s birth, Terry and the child were out on an errand.

After giving birth, Hassell called Terry to tell him to return to the motel. On his way back, Terry was pulled over for speeding— and it was only after learning that Terry wasn’t coming that Hassell called 911.

“She should have called 911 earlier — she should have reached out to medical professionals, she didn’t do that, and that’s why she’s in jail,” Cochran said.

Hassell and Terry are both in Marion County Jail, where she has been charged with child neglect. The 11-month-old boy has been placed in foster care.

Pregnant U.K. woman is dead after a doctor removed the wrong organ

pregnant woman

A pregnant U.K. woman is dead after a doctor removed the wrong organ during a routine surgery.

Maria De Jesus, 32, was admitted into the hospital. She was 21 weeks pregnant with her fourth child and suffering from abdominal pains.

It reports her doctor, Yahya Al-Abed, brought her into surgery to remove her appendix, but accidentally removed her ovary. He had only been working at the hospital for three weeks and had little experience operating on pregnant women.

De Jesus died in London just 19 days later after having a miscarriage. Al-Abed admits to the mistake, but says there was no misconduct. His senior consultant Dr. Coker is also in hot water.

Dr. Coker was supposed to oversee the surgery, but instead he reportedly told Al-Abed he would ‘be around during the procedure but went home during it.

Pain-free solution for spider veins

veins_640

Though generally harmless, hair-thin blemishes, known as spider veins, can cause some to want to cover up even in the heat. Treating spider veins is rarely a medical necessity (though some seek treatment to relieve the aching the veins can cause), but for those who want it, spider vein-free skin is just a zap away.

No one knows why some people develop spider veins and others don’t, but genetics, the hormone estrogen and possibly the hormone progesterone are thought to play a role. Spider veins appear more frequently in women than in men, and are particularly common in pregnant women and those taking oral contraceptives or hormone-replacement therapy.

Getting rid of spider veins is safe and easy. Sclerotherapy, the gold-standard treatment for spider veins, involves injecting a saline solution or detergent into the veins, causing them to clump together or clot and become less apparent. “Anybody who has veins they don’t like is a good candidate (for sclerotherapy) because it’s an incredibly safe, easy procedure,” says Dr. Lisa Donofrio, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine.

In some cases, several injections are required. The procedure feels like a tiny needle stick, and Donofrio says even needlephobic patients usually get through it with little difficulty. Donofrio particularly recommends treatment for people with a family history of problem veins who are showing signs relatively early – for example, those who have multiple patches of spider veins by their early 20s.

There is a strong chance — up to 90 percent — of greatly improved appearance after sclerotherapy, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Results last for two years on average, notes Donofrio. After that, genetics or whatever other factors caused the veins to appear in the first place tend to take over, and maintenance treatment is required to keep the skin vein-free.

Charges for sclerotherapy typically range from $375 to $750 for both legs. Some doctors charge a set fee; others charge per vein treated.

Laser treatment can also eliminate spider veins, but it tends to be less effective and more expensive than sclerotherapy, with the same level of discomfort, according to Dr. Matthew P. Olivo, a dermatologist based in Westmont, New Jersey, and a fellow of the AAD. Lasers, however, are a good option for treating delicate areas and for people who are allergic to the injection solution.

Doctors often use a combination of sclerotherapy and lasers: sclerotherapy for the major part of the treatment and a laser to get rid of the tip of the vein. Laser techniques for removing spider veins are expected to improve greatly during the next decade.

While most side effects of sclerotherapy are not serious, you could experience a number of physical reactions during and following the treatment, including:

  • stinging, burning or muscle cramps during injection
  • skin discoloration
  • new vessel growth at the site of injection
  • raised, hive-like bumps or tiny sores in the treatment area
  • bruising
  • allergic reaction to injection solution
  • blood clots, in rare instances

5 Ways Pets Can Improve Your Health

pets

A pet is certainly a great friend. After a difficult day, pet owners quite literally feel the love.

In fact, for nearly 25 years, research has shown that living with pets provides certain health benefits. Pets help lower blood pressure and lessen anxiety. They boost our immunity. They can even help you get dates.

Allergy Fighters

“The old thinking was that if your family had a pet, the children were more likely to become allergic to the pet. And if you came from an allergy-prone family, pets should be avoided,” says researcher James E. Gern, MD, a pediatrician at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

However, a growing number of studies have suggested that kids growing up in a home with “furred animals” — whether it’s a pet cat or dog, or on a farm and exposed to large animals — will have less risk of allergies and asthma, he tells WebMD.

In his recent study, Gern analyzed the blood of babies immediately after birth and one year later. He was looking for evidence of an allergic reaction, immunity changes, and for reactions to bacteria in the environment.
If a dog lived in the home, infants were less likely to show evidence of pet allergies — 19% vs. 33%. They also were less likely to have eczema, a common allergy skin condition that causes red patches and itching. In addition, they had higher levels of some immune system chemicals — a sign of stronger immune system activation.

“Dogs are dirty animals, and this suggests that babies who have greater exposure to dirt and allergens have a stronger immune system,” Gern says.

Date Magnets

Dogs are great for making love connections. Forget Internet matchmaking — a dog is a natural conversation starter.

This especially helps ease people out of social isolation or shyness, Nadine Kaslow, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University in Atlanta, tells WebMD.

“People ask about breed, they watch the dog’s tricks,” Kaslow says. “Sometimes the conversation stays at the ‘dog level,’ sometimes it becomes a real social interchange.”

Dogs for the Aged

“Studies have shown that Alzheimer’s patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home,” says Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

“Their caregivers also feel less burdened when there is a pet, particularly if it is a cat, which generally requires less care than a dog,” says Hart.

Walking a dog or just caring for a pet — for elderly people who are able — can provide exercise and companionship. One insurance company, Midland Life Insurance Company of Columbus, Ohio, asks clients over age 75 if they have a pet as part of their medical screening — which often helps tip the scales in their favor.

Pet owners with AIDS are far less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets. “The benefit is especially pronounced when people are strongly attached to their pets,” says researcher Judith Siegel, PhD.

In one study, stockbrokers with high blood pressure who adopted a cat or dog had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than did people without pets.

People in stress mode get into a “state of dis-ease,” in which harmful chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine can negatively affect the immune system, says Blair Justice, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health and author of Who Gets Sick: How Beliefs, Moods, and Thoughts Affect Your Health.

Studies show a link between these chemicals and plaque buildup in arteries, the red flag for heart disease, says Justice.

Like any enjoyable activity, playing with a dog can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine — nerve transmitters that are known to have pleasurable and calming properties, he tells WebMD.

“People take drugs like heroin and cocaine to raise serotonin and dopamine, but the healthy way to do it is to pet your dog, or hug your spouse, watch sunsets, or get around something beautiful in nature,” says Justice, who recently hiked the Colorado Rockies with his wife and two dogs.

Good for the Heart

Heart attack patients who have pets survive longer than those without, according to several studies. Male pet owners have less sign of heart disease — lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels — than non-owners, researchers say.

Kidney health: Symptoms of Cyst on Kidney

kidney

PKD describes kidney cyst grows and increases, causing kidney damage and declined kidney function. In addition, many other symptoms like anemia, swelling and high blood pressure can appear. Then, if cyst grows to 10 cm, what symptoms will occur?

1. High blood pressure
Due to increase and growth of cyst, kidney and other parts in body can be suppressed, especially blood vessels. In this way, pressure in blood vessels can be enhanced, leading to high blood pressure. The bigger and more kidney cyst is , the higher blood pressure is. As for 10 cm cyst, it is very large, causing high blood pressure for patients.

2. Pain in back
Due to big cyst in kidney area, tissues or organs surrounded by cyst can be affected and damaged, resulting in pain in back.

3. Blood in the urine
Just as balloon is very easy to break when it is big enough, 10 cm cyst can be very pone to rupture, too. If it happens, bleeding can appear. In this case, these blood can flow away through urine, forming blood in urine.

4. High creatinine level
As is known, creatinine level is an indicator of kidney function. The more serious kidney function is, the higher creatinine level is. As 10 cm cyst is very big to damage kidney, kidney function can be affected. In this way, kidney can’t remove much creatinine from body, leading to high creatinine level.

Patients with 10 cm cyst on kidney are very likely to have the above symptoms. If you are a patients with PKD with the above symptoms, it means that your cyst grows very largely, and it is very necessary for you to get timely and effective treatment. Forget Viagra, now there’s ice-cream that can turn you on!

viagra1

A British ice cream maker has developed a flavour, ‘The Arousal’, which includes 25 mg of Viagra per scoop. Charlie Harry Francis, who created the concoction, wrote on his blog ‘Lick Me, I’m Delicious’ that that champagne is also a key ingredient in the flavour.

Francis told Latin Times that champagne-flavoured/Viagra ice cream was a custom order by an A-list celeb, and he spent a few days developing the recipe. He said incorporating the Viagra was easy but making it taste nicely of champagne was tough.
